Overview
An autogynephile is a male who is sexually aroused by the thought or image of himself as a woman. The term was introduced by sexologist Ray Blanchard in the late 1980s as part of his typology of male transsexuality.
Autogynephilia is defined as “a male paraphilia in which a man experiences sexual excitement at the idea of having a female body or presenting as a woman.” Blanchard proposed that this sexual motivation explains the majority of male transition cases that do not fit the “homosexual transsexual” pattern.
The concept is highly controversial because it directly contradicts a core claim of modern trans ideology—namely, that a person’s gender identity is an innate, immutable internal essence rather than a psychological condition or sexual motivation.
Origins and Definition
Ray Blanchard’s research (1985–1991) divided male transitioners into two broad etiological groups:
- Homosexual Transsexuals
- Exclusively attracted to men.
- Display feminine behavior from childhood.
- Seek to transition as an extension of homosexual orientation.
- Autogynephiles
- Attracted to women (or bisexual/asexual).
- Exhibit masculine behavior early in life.
- Transition is driven by a sexual or romantic desire to inhabit a female form.
Blanchard described autogynephilia as “a man’s erotic target location error,” meaning the target of attraction is displaced onto the self imagined as female.
Types of Autogynephilia
Blanchard outlined several subtypes:
- Transvestic Autogynephilia–arousal from wearing women’s clothing
- Physiological Autogynephilia–arousal from imagining having female anatomy
- Behavioral Autogynephilia–arousal from performing stereotypically female behaviors
- Anatomical Autogynephilia–arousal from the mental image of possessing breasts, vulva, etc.
Many individuals report combinations of these.
Relevance to Trans Ideology
Modern trans activism strongly rejects the concept of autogynephilia for several reasons:
1. It challenges the “born this way” narrative
If male transition can be driven by a paraphilia, then “gender identity” is not universally innate or biological. (it’s not—J.C.)
2. It reframes some transition cases as sexual in nature
The idea that some males transition for sexual reasons contradicts activist claims that transition is purely about alleviating gender dysphoria.
3. It exposes a split within male-to-female (MTF) transitioners
A substantial body of research indicates that:
- Heterosexual males who transition are far more likely to show autogynephilic patterns.
- Gay males who transition rarely do.
Activist groups resist distinguishing these categories.
4. It creates political risk
Acknowledging autogynephilia undermines:
- The claim that MTF = “women”
- The justification for access to women’s spaces
- The messaging used in public policy campaigns
Thus, activist literature often labels the theory as “debunked,” “transphobic,” or “pseudoscience,” despite the fact that the research base (Blanchard, Bailey, Lawrence, Freund, Veale, Anne Lawrence’s extensive autobiographical analyses, etc.) is substantial.
Position in Contemporary Research
Despite political controversy, autogynephilia is:
Well-supported in empirical sexology
(Hundreds of case studies, strong correlations with sexual orientation, consistent patterns across cultures.)Acknowledged indirectly in mainstream gender clinics
(Clinicians often describe “late-transitioning heterosexual males” with erotic cross-gender fantasies without using the word.)Openly discussed in detransition communities
(Many male detransitioners report discovering that their motivations were autogynephilic.)Commonly reported in online forums
(Anonymous discussions show widespread self-acknowledgment among transitioners.)
Controversies
Activist Rejection
Trans activist organizations classify the theory as bigoted, harmful, or invalid. However, these responses are typically political rather than research-based.
Self-Reporting vs. Public Denial
Autogynephilia is often denied in public but admitted anonymously. This creates a phenomenon where:
- The condition is common
- But acknowledging it is socially prohibited
Impact on Policy and Culture
Autogynephilia is relevant to:
- Prison housing and women’s shelters
- Access to female-only spaces
- Media representations of “stunning and brave” late-transitioners
- Psychological models of gender dysphoria
When male transition arises from a sexual motivation rather than an innate identity, the ethical and policy landscape shifts significantly. Which is something trans activists will not tolerate.
